What happens?

You come to us and we cast the moulds. While we are taking the mould we need baby/child to be as still as possible. Singing, rocking and feeding are ways to distract baby from the mould being taken. Timing the appointment so that baby is asleep is helpful, but not always possible! Your baby’s hands and feet are immersed in liquid for a matter of seconds and when the liquid has set the hand and foot are easily removed, leaving the mould intact.

How Long Does it Take?

Allow approximately an hour for the casting to take place. Once the cast has been taken we pour wax into it. The wax takes about 10 minutes to set, is then unwrapped and you see how baby has held their hands and feet.

What to Bring?

A relaxed demeanor, baby dressed in old clothing and your deposit. If you wish to pay via internet banking please advise and we’ll give you our bank details.

How Long Does it Take to Have a Casey Brown Bronze Sculpture crafted?

Stage 1: The creation of the mould of the subject's hands and feet, takes approximately an hour. From here the moulds are crafted in the foundry.

Stage 2: In the foundry, Casey Brown Bronze Sculptures take approximately 4 weeks, from the time that the mould was created. They are crafted in batches, so sometimes there may be a delay due to the fact that a batch has just begun being produced and we are waiting on more moulds.

If you have a deadline or a special date that you want your Casey Brown Bronze Sculptures for, please let us know as early as possible, and we will do our very best to accommodate.

I would like the Bronze Sculpture to Give as a Gift, so have a Deadline, can you Help?

What happens in the foundry?

We use the Ancient Lost Wax Bronze Casting method, to create your Casey Brown Bronze Sculpture.  We understand how important and special it is to have a mould cast and a Bronze Sculpture created, that is why, behind the scenes we spend hours and hours creating the best Bronze Sculptures that can be created from the mould taken.

Some could describe us a fanatical, as we are passionate about producing the best quality that can be achieved. So much so, we put our name on it. Casey Brown Bronze Sculptures are crafted here in New Zealand, with quality outcomes that equal or exceed anywhere else in the world.

The steps we take behind the scenes to create your Casey Brown Bronze Sculptures are time consuming and incredibly labour intensive. In summary form, the Lost Wax Bronze Casting method is as follows:

  • The mould produces a negative replica of the hand, foot or paw.
  • Hot wax is poured into the mould to create an almost exact replica of the hand, foot or paw.
  • When set, the wax is removed from the mould, which is now a positive replica of the hand, foot or paw.
  • The wax reproduction is coated in a resin compound and sand to form a ceramic shell.
  • The reproduction is hung to dry to become solid.
  • The wax is melted from inside the ceramic shell in a kiln that is heated to 850 degrees Celsius.
  • Bronze is heated to its melting point of 1150 degrees Celsius, then poured into the cavity of the ceramic shell.
  • The shell is heated and the molten Bronze fills the cavity space.
  • Once the Bronze has solidified, the shells are broken and the sculpture is then smoothed and polished.
  • Each piece is positioned to ensure it stands correctly.
  • One of the final steps is to give the Bronze its colour. Oxidation of the Bronze is called Patination. Applying an acid to the Bronze results in a chemical reaction, which turns to colour.
  • The Bronze Sculpture is brushed with a protective layer, which prevents further oxidation.
  • Each Casey Brown Bronze Sculpture is then engraved with the name and age of the customer.

"We love the castings of our twins. Capturing them at the age we did was so precious. Thanks for creating such lovely pieces."
